Q:
What is chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts that specializes
in conditions that affect nerves, muscles, ligaments and bones
of the body. It is a drug-free method of health care that
emphasizes locating and treating areas of spinal misalignment,
improving the functioning of the body, thereby eliminating
pain. The symptom of pain is how your body communicates to let
you know that something is wrong. Drugs may be convenient and
seem like a quick fix, but they typically only temporarily
cover up the symptom, produce some side effects and don’t
treat the cause of the problem.

Q: How does
chiropractic work?
Chiropractic works because you are a self-healing,
self-regulating organism controlled by your nervous system. Millions of instructions flow from your brain down the spinal
cord and out to every organ and tissue. Improper motion or
position of the spine (called subluxation) can interfere with
this vital exchange by irritating nerves and compromising the
function of affected organs and tissues. Top

Q: How do I get
subluxations?
There are three basic causes of subluxations. Physical causes
could include slips and falls, accidents, repetitive motions,
poor posture, aging and improper lifting. Emotions such as
grief, anger, stress and fear can cause subluxations. Chemical
causes could include alcohol, drugs, pollution and poor diet. Top

Q: How do I know if I have a subluxation?
You can have subluxations and not even know it. Like the early
stages of tooth decay or cancer, subluxations can be present
before warning signs appear. The results of a thorough
examination can show the location and severity of subluxations
you may have. Top

Q:
Can subluxations clear up on their own?
Sometimes. Today’s hectic lifestyles are a constant source of subluxations. Fortunately, our bodies have the ability to
self-correct many of these problems as we bend and stretch, or
when we sleep at night. When subluxations don’t resolve, you
need to see a chiropractic doctor. Top

Q: What's an
adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments usually involve a quick thrust that
helps add motion to spinal joints that aren’t moving right.
This gentle, safe procedure helps to improve spinal alignment,
nervous system functioning, relieve muscle spasms and allow
the body to start healing.

Q:
Does the chiropractic adjustment hurt?
Normally the adjustment not only is painless, but also can
provide immediate relief. In cases of recent trauma or severe
symptoms, there can be some discomfort due to inflammation. Occasionally, there is some mild soreness in the muscles after
the first couple adjustments. This is a similar feeling as if
you just started a new workout program. Proper application of
ice after the treatment helps to minimize this affect Top

Q: Are
chiropractic adjustments safe?
Yes. A New Zealand government study found that adjustments are
“remarkably safe.” By avoiding drugs and risky surgery,
chiropractic care enjoys an excellent track record. A thorough
exam can identify the rare person for whom chiropractic care
might be unsuited. Compare the statistics. Adjustments are
about 100 times safer than taking an over-the-counter pain
reliever. Top

Q:
What are the risks of having a stroke?
The chances of having a stroke are extremely rare. Statistics
have evaluated the risk from 1-2 in four million treatments.
There is no risk involved in having your back adjusted. The
occurrence of a stroke is no greater than from natural
movements of the neck. There have been documented cases of
stroke though neck movements doing yoga, overhead work,
driving a car and exercise.

Q:
What makes the sound during the adjustment?
Lubricating fluids separate the bones of each spinal joint. Some adjusting methods can produce a sound when the gas and
fluids in the joint shift. It’s much like opening a bottle of
champagne or removing a suction cup. The sound is interesting,
but it isn’t a guide to the quality or value of the
adjustment. Top

Q: How
many adjustments will I need?
The number of adjustments varies with each patient and their
individual health goals. Many patients sense progress within a
week or two of frequent visits. Visits become less often as
your spine stabilizes. In chronic cases, complete healing can
take months or even years. Many factors can affect the healing
process. How long have you had your problem? Are you keeping
your appointments? Are you getting the proper rest, exercise
and nutrition? Do you smoke? Are you in otherwise good health?

Q:
Why do children need chiropractic care?
Since significant spinal trauma can occur at birth, many
parents have their newborns checked. Later, learning to walk,
riding a bicycle and other childhood activities can cause
spinal problems. Many childhood health complaints that are
brushed off as “growing pains” can often be traced to the
spine. Regular chiropractic checkups can identify these
problems and help avoid many of the health complaints seen
later in adults.

Q: Is
chiropractic addicting?
Chiropractic is just as addicting as when you exercise and eat
right. When your body is receiving something that is good for
it, it doesn’t want it taken away. If you were used to
exercising on a regular basis and then stopped, you would not
feel as well. It is up to you to decide the quality of your
health. Top

Q: What kind of education and training do Chiropractors
have?
The Doctor of Chiropractic undergoes a minimum of eight years
of college education. This includes four years of preparatory
study, four years of professional study and clinical training.
Chiropractors are required to pass stringent national board
examinations as a prerequisite for licensure in most states. Yearly continued education is required to keep abreast of
current information and techniques.
